RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE THERMOPLASTIC MATERIALS FOR PACKAGING APPLICATIONS
THERMOPACK
Motivation
The increasing environmental requirements and new regulatory frameworks are driving the packaging industry to replace conventional polymers with more sustainable materials. However, currently available biopolymers still show limitations in terms of mechanical properties, barrier performance and processability, which hinders their direct use in industrial applications.
In response to this need, the project arises with the objective of developing sustainable packaging formulations and systems, optimising their performance in polymer processing technologies such as blow moulding, thermoforming and injection moulding.

Objectives
The objective of the project is to develop and optimise new sustainable thermoplastic materials for use in packaging applications, through the identification and formulation of advanced raw materials, the production of sheets and mono‑ and multi‑material systems, and the development of demonstrators that validate their technical and functional performance in sustainable packaging solutions.
Expected results

-
Identification and processing of new sustainable thermoplastic raw materials for use in polymer transformation processes focused on packaging.
-
Development of thermoplastic sheets based on sustainable raw materials and formulations, such as recycled, bio‑based or biodegradable materials.
-
Development of sustainable mono‑ and multi‑material packaging systems.
-
Development of packaging demonstrators based on the materials and systems developed within the project.
