ENHANCING TEAM AWARENESS WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND AUGMENTED REALITY

TEAMAWARE

Motivation

Although first response teams provide safe societies by protecting communities, responding to disasters, and saving lives, they often rely on inefficient, weak, and outdated technologies in their operations [[ii]]. Regarding the current situation, the operational capabilities of first response teams could be significantly enhanced by advances in technology and engineering fields, such as smart sensor systems, wearable devices, data processing, fusion and analysis, communication infrastructure, and artificial intelligence tools.

Objectives

The main objective of the project is to develop an integrated and sustainable system capable of warning first response and emergency teams from different sectors about various situations using heterogeneous and difficult-to-interoperate sensors, such as embedded sensors, wearables, and sensors mounted on drones. All of this aims to enhance crisis management, flexibility, and real-time response capabilities of emergency and first response teams by merging and refining information through the use of highly standardized augmented reality and mobile human-machine interfaces.

The project involves 24 European partners, including AITEX, FRAUNHOFER, THALES, UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE, among others, and is led by the Turkish company HAVELSAN, a leading software provider for the defense sector. AITEX is contributing to the development of a system with various harmful gas sensors integrated into textiles, allowing first response teams to be alerted to the presence of hazardous agents or pathogens in the atmosphere near a disaster or accident site.

Expected results

  • The TEAMAWARE project started in May 2021 and is currently in an initial phase, where the specifications are being defined and the requirements of the different modules and components that will form part of the final global system are being analyzed.
  • A validation process will be carried out for all the elements developed during the project in situations simulating real environments, in order to verify that the entire system works correctly and that the information and alerts provided to first response teams are useful for the performance of their duties.
