SELF-SENSE

Motivation


Monitoring health parameters has become essential in both sports and healthcare, as it enables more quantified tracking of well-being and helps improve physical activity and disease prevention. Research on wearable devices has opened new possibilities for portable monitoring of human body variables by integrating sensors in direct contact with the skin, allowing precise real-time data collection.

In this context, the SELF-SENS project builds on previous advances by the Textile Technology Institute (AITEX) and the Energy Technology Institute (ITE), aiming to advance continuous and personalized health monitoring. Through the development of wearable (bio)sensors, the project facilitates real-time clinical tracking of physiological and biochemical parameters, providing a comfortable, autonomous, and user-friendly tool for evaluating and improving athletic performance.

Objectives


Develop wearable sensor devices integrated into smart textiles, capable of continuously, autonomously, and in real time monitoring physiological and biochemical parameters. The initiative focuses on developing electrophysiological sensors (EXG) and lactate biosensors self-powered by enzymatic biofuel cells using sweat as an energy source, thus promoting sustainable solutions without the need for conventional batteries. In addition, systems for autonomous sample collection will be integrated to enhance device usability.

Expected results


  • Wearable biofuel cell that generates energy from sweat, powering connected monitoring devices such as (bio)sensors, producing clean energy from biological fluids, and reducing waste.
  • Textile patch substrate designed to be hydrophilic, biocompatible, and washable, enabling efficient sample collection and comfortable, secure adhesion for the user.
  • Wearable EXG health monitoring sensor for capturing various electrical signals from the human body without conventional medical or sports gels.
  • Wearable lactate biosensor for autonomous analysis of specific biomarkers in interstitial fluid.
