DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE AND ADVANCED TECHNICAL ADHESIVES AND COATINGS FOR TEXTILE AND RELATED APPLICATIONS

PURESKIN

Motivation

The PURESKIN project is framed within the dual trend towards high‑performance and sustainable technical adhesives and coatings, integrating both approaches within the textile sector, footwear, and leather‑like materials.
In the field of adhesives, scientific and technical interest focuses on the development of bio‑based formulations, particularly hot‑melt systems and advanced technical formulations such as plant‑based acrylates curable both chemically and through ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The aim is to reduce dependence on fossil resources while achieving advanced technical properties for lamination, labelling and assembly applications.
In parallel, the project addresses innovation in sustainable and technical polyurethane coatings. This includes the formulation of bio‑based PU dispersions designed to achieve specific target properties through tailored formulation; the development of 2K foamed systems to generate coatings with volume and softness; and the synthesis of 2K polyurea coatings that provide high physico‑mechanical performance through highly cross‑linked networks.

Objectives

The main objective of the PURESKIN project is to design, formulate and validate new generations of sustainable adhesives and coatings based on bio‑derived polymers and efficient curing technologies, offering advanced technical performance for textile, footwear and related applications, while integrating criteria of sustainability, functionality and circularity.

Expected results

  • Development of bio‑based hot‑melt formulations, optimising compatibility, processability and adhesive performance for textile, labelling and footwear applications.
  • Design of plant‑based acrylated adhesives curable both chemically and by UV radiation, reducing the use of fossil‑based raw materials while achieving technical properties comparable to conventional adhesives.
  • Evaluation of the performance of the developed adhesives in real lamination processes, optimising their rheological, adhesive and mechanical behaviour.
  • Formulation of bio‑based polyurethane (PU) dispersions tailored to target properties through specific formulation design.
  • Development of 2K foamed systems to obtain coatings with improved “hand feel” and volume for leather‑like materials, while maintaining sustainability and structural stability.
  • Synthesis of high‑performance 2K polyurea coatings based on highly cross‑linked networks, providing excellent physico‑mechanical properties.
