New high-performance functionalised materials
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW SUSTAINABLE RESINS, NUCLEII AND TEXTILE REINFORCING WITH APPLICATIONS IN THE COMPOSITE MATERIALS INDUSTRY.
GREEN COMP 2025
Motivation
The composite materials industry faces the challenge of incorporating eco-design strategies that promote recyclability and minimise their environmental impact. In response to these needs, AITEX develops technological initiatives that explore various avenues to improve the environmental friendliness of the materials, integrating new technologies and innovative approaches to optimise both production and life cycle.
With solid experience in projects related to sustainable composites research, AITEX actively contributes to the development of materials with a smaller ecological footprint, promoting the use of natural fibres, bio-based resins and more efficient processes. These initiatives respond to the current challenges of the sector, providing solutions that combine high technical performance with environmental commitment.
This approach reflects AITEX’s commitment to promoting sustainability in key industries, reinforcing its leadership as a technology centre at the forefront of innovation and development of advanced materials.

Objectives
The main objective of this R&D project is to develop innovative tools and solutions to reduce the environmental impact of the composite materials industry. To this end, the use of sustainable materials will be investigated and promoted, including chemically reversible resins, sustainable synthesis resins (bio-based), and fabrics of recycled or natural origin, as well as bio-based resins and cores made from recycled materials.
Expected results

-
Formulation and synthesis of new bio-based resins that can be used as sustainable alternatives in the manufacture of composite materials.
-
Development and optimisation of reversible chemistry resins with improved recyclability properties, allowing their recovery and reuse at the end of the composites’ useful life.
-
Production and evaluation of recycled polyurethane (rPU) foam cores for integration into sustainable composites.
-
Development of innovative formulations for BMC (Bulk Molding Compound) and SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) processes incorporating sustainable resins, recycled or natural fibres and fillers from industrial waste.
-
Design and manufacture of prototypes or demonstrators of composites for highly technical sectors.
-
Characterisation of composite materials by different manufacturing techniques, to evaluate technical properties and performance.
-
Analysis of the technical feasibility and needs for the application of the materials.
