RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF SMART TEXTILES FOR IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL REALITY EXPERIENCES
GAMIFY 2023
Motivations
Advances in Virtual Reality technologies have allowed its use to expand beyond the world of gaming and now several manufacturers in the sector are developing devices that run VR technology for more everyday applications, such as rehabilitation, sports and artistic solutions.
The possibilities offered by smart textiles combined with VR in activities outside the world of video games, are varied, and include providing support for the elderly and disabled.
The use of smart textiles allows a direct connection between the physical and the virtual, offering the user a world of experiences.

Objectives
Develop smart textiles that use VR to contribute to an immersive user experience through sensorisation and gamification solutions, and exploit the functionalities of the technology for applications outside the area of video games.
Research will be carried out on VR solutions and accessories that bridge the gap between the two worlds and investigate the capabilities of smart textiles in virtual reality experiences.
The aim is to develop wearables that combine inertial and haptic sensors with other sensors and actuators, enabling more immersive virtual experiences for the wearer.
In addition, small wearable VR systems will be developed, as well as solutions that enable real user interaction in a virtual environment through the use of smart textiles.
Expected results

Improvement of the prototype developed in the previous year, to obtain:
-
A report on existing solutions on the market today and possibilities for improvement.
-
Improve and simplify the design of the wearable textile demonstrator prototype in a virtual environment for gamification, reducing the number and size of the electronics it currently has, eliminating the use of VR goggle controllers.
-
Develop sensorised garments that allow the user to experience the link between the real and virtual worlds by using smart textiles with a range of physical sensors that react to stimuli from the virtual environment.
