R&D TO OPTIMISATE MELT SPINNING PROCESSES FOR SUSTAINABLE THERMOPLASTIC POLYMERS
ECOMELT
Motivations
Industry’s demands for sustainable yarns are growing and the ECOMELT project seeks to optimise the melt spinning processes to improve the physical-mechanical properties of recycled, bio-based and biodegradable/compostable polymers. The aim is to expand the range of added-value competitive sustainable products to provide companies in the Valencia Region real alternatives to adapt their processes/products to the new environmental requirements such as the new EU Directive 2018/851. This establishes new regulations in which member states will be obliged to undertake the selective collection of textile waste before 1 January 2025.

Objectives
The overall objective of the project is to improve the mechanical properties of recycled polymers by optimising spinning processes, investigating spinning processes for sustainable polymers and polymer additivation to minimise environmental impact.
Value and competitive advantage

-
High tensile strength in polymer spinning.
-
Optimization of the melt spinning process.
-
Future possibilities of modifying conventional polymers (such as polyester) to make them more sustainable while maintaining the mechanical properties required by the market.
Results obtained

-
Improvement of properties in recycled polymers.
-
New bio-based and biodegradable/compostable polymers.
-
Polymers with added enzymes that minimize environmental impact.
