CLOTH INSPECTION & AUTOMATION WITH IA

CLOTHIA

Motivation

The textile sector is undergoing a strategic transformation driven by European regulations and environmental urgency. The Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC) requires that, by January 1, 2025, all Member States implement separate collection of textile waste, promoting a circular economy. However, the current model, based on manual processes and lacking traceability, is insufficient to handle the growing volume of waste and the complexity of textile materials, characterized by their soft, deformable, and variable nature. This challenge has limited technological adoption and automation in sorting. In response, the CLOTHIA project emerges, proposing a disruptive solution through advanced robotics, multimodal perception, and artificial intelligence. Its goal is to manipulate complex textiles, assess their condition and composition with high precision, speed, and traceability—far surpassing human capabilities—and apply this to both waste and new textiles.

Objectives

The main objective of the CLOTHIA project (CLOTH Inspection & Automation with AI) is to develop a comprehensive, automated, and intelligent technological solution to address one of the textile sector’s main challenges: the identification, handling, and classification of garments or textile objects based on their physical condition and material composition, in order to enable optimal decisions in reuse, recycling, or recovery processes, as well as in industrial contexts of quality control and traceability.

Expected results

  • A detection and classification system for the condition and composition of post-consumer textile garments using advanced vision and AI technologies.
  • New methodologies and efficient tools for handling deformable objects, focused on gripping and manipulating textiles.
  • A material knowledge base and AI algorithms for automatic calibration and model selection.
  • A specific software module for extracting, synchronizing, and fusing different data modalities (voice, image, tactile sensors, etc.) in real time.
  • Data enhancement tools (super-resolution, reconstruction) and capture assistance (detection of suboptimal conditions).
