SMART MULTIFUNCTION TEXTILES FOR INTEGRATED SOLDIER SYSTEMS
ARMETISS
Motivation
Smart textiles are a promising technology that integrates materials, components, and devices into fabrics, enabling them to interact, react, and adapt to environmental stimuli in a useful way for the user.
Smart textiles offer various functionalities for military applications, enhancing soldiers’ safety, situational awareness, and performance through thermoregulation, geolocation, wireless communication, physiological monitoring, and detection of CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) risks.
However, incorporating new elements into military equipment can increase size, weight, thermal stress, reduce mobility, and enhance visual and thermal signatures, negatively impacting soldiers’ safety, health, comfort, and performance.

Objectives
The ARMETISS project aims to fully harness the potential of smart textiles by applying and integrating them into the systems and equipment used by soldiers. The goal is to enhance key capabilities related to protection, situational awareness, and performance, maximizing the protection and functionality provided by military equipment and systems while minimizing their weight and size.
The objective of the ARMETISS project is to develop an intelligent combat uniform based on smart textiles through the study of enabling technologies and the design, manufacturing, and testing of a multifunctional prototype. This prototype will utilize the most promising smart textile technologies to improve the protection, comfort, and operational capacity of soldiers.
AITEX will contribute to the evaluation of enabling technologies related to CBRN risk monitoring, thermoregulation, and physiological monitoring, as well as the design and development of functional modules that will form part of the project’s final prototypes.
Expected results

-
Definition of enabling technologies related to the field of smart textiles most relevant to military systems and equipment.
-
Design of an integrated and multifunctional combat system tailored to soldiers’ requirements and different combat scenarios.
-
Manufacture of a series of prototypes through the integration of smart textiles.
-
Testing of the prototypes under both laboratory conditions and scenarios representative of combat situations.
