R&D ON THE BIOFABRICATION OF MATERIALS DERIVED FROM ALGAE, FUNGI, AND BACTERIA

ALHOBA

Motivation

In recent years, the textile and fashion sector has been promoting a transition towards more sustainable materials in order to reduce dependence on animal-based sources or petrochemical derivatives. Within this trend, biomaterials derived from organisms such as microalgae, fungi, and bacteria are emerging as a disruptive alternative due to their renewable nature, low environmental footprint, and the design and customization possibilities they offer.
Biofabrication using microorganisms and biopolymers is demonstrating significant potential to generate materials with properties comparable to those of animal leather, while simultaneously enabling the incorporation of advanced functionalities without relying on polluting processes. In this context, AITEX has consolidated experience in the research and development of biomaterials, as well as in synthesis, functionalization, and pre-industrial scale-up processes, enabling the exploration of new pathways for the development of emerging sustainable materials.

Objectives

The objective of the project is to develop new sustainable biomaterials based on algae, fungi, and bacteria as alternatives to animal-derived leather, through the investigation of innovative biofabrication, functionalization, and customization processes that enable their application in the textile, fashion, and upholstery sectors.

Expected results

  • Obtaining reproducible results in each of the research lines addressed in the project.
  • Developing representative prototypes of the technologies employed, based on the results obtained.
  • Demonstrating that these prototypes exhibit mechanical, aesthetic, and processability properties comparable to those of commercial materials.
  • Validating the viability of the biofabrication technologies studied based on prototype performance.
  • Establishing the technical and methodological foundations required for the future optimization and scaling-up of these technologies.
