WHAT IS A PATCH TEST?
The Patch Test is the standard test for assessing the skin tolerance of cosmetic products. It involves the controlled application of the product to the skin using occlusive adhesive patches, generally on the backs of volunteers. Occlusion promotes continuous contact between the product and the skin, maximising exposure and making it possible to detect potential reactions even under particularly demanding conditions.
The patch is usually removed after 48 hours, when an initial dermatological assessment is carried out. Depending on the established protocol, additional readings may be performed 24 or 48 hours later to identify potential delayed reactions. The assessment is carried out using standardised scales that consider signs such as erythema, oedema, dryness or desquamation.
The Patch Test is a key tool for demonstrating the safety and skin tolerance of cosmetic products, providing valuable information for manufacturers, distributors and consumers. Studies can be carried out on people with different skin types, including normal, sensitive, reactive, atopic or acne-prone skin, ensuring an assessment tailored to the specific characteristics and needs of each product

WHY CARRY OUT A PATCH TEST?

Safety
It makes it possible to identify potential irritant reactions before the product is placed on the market

Skin tolerance
It assesses product compatibility with the skin under controlled conditions

Validation
It provides objective evidence of the safety of the formulation in use

Dermatological claims
It provides technical support for claims such as âdermatologically testedâ

Confidence
It strengthens product credibility among consumers, distributors and markets
HOW IS THE TEST CARRIED OUT?

Protocol selection
The study design is defined according to the product characteristics and assessment objectives.

Product application
The cosmetic product is applied to the skin using occlusive adhesive patches, generally on the back.

Exposure period
The product remains in contact with the skin for the period established in the protocol.

Dermatological assessment
The results are read and potential skin reactions are clinically assessed.

Technical report
A report is issued containing the results and the assessment of the productâs skin tolerance.
