WHAT IS A CHALLENGE TEST?
The Challenge Test assesses the ability of a cosmetic product’s preservative system to inhibit microbial growth throughout its shelf life. It involves the controlled inoculation of representative strains (bacteria, yeasts and moulds) and monitoring their reduction over time, verifying compliance with the criteria set out in ISO 11930 or other applicable references.
This test demonstrates that the formulation maintains an adequate level of microbiological protection under foreseeable conditions of storage and use, providing key evidence for the cosmetic product safety assessment.
At AITEX, we carry out ENAC-accredited Challenge Tests in accordance with ISO 11930. We also offer the option of extending the study to include specific microorganisms when the risk analysis, the target market or the characteristics of the product so require.

WHY CARRY OUT A CHALLENGE TEST?

Safety
Ensures the microbiological safety of the product throughout its shelf life

Validation
Validates the efficacy of the formulation’s preservative system

Documentation
Provides technical evidence for the safety assessment and the Product Information File (PIF)

Quality
Reduces the risk of incidents, complaints and quality issues

Trust
Strengthens end-consumer trust
HOW IS THE TEST CARRIED OUT?

Protocol definition
The characteristics of the product are assessed and the most suitable microorganisms and evaluation criteria are established.

Controlled inoculation
Samples are inoculated with representative bacteria, yeasts and moulds in accordance with the requirements of the applicable standards.

Microbiological monitoring
Periodic checks are carried out to determine how the microbial population evolves and how effective the preservative system is.

Evaluation of results
The results are compared with the acceptance criteria set out in ISO 11930 or other reference protocols.

Technical report issue
The study conclusions are drawn up and a report containing the results is issued.
Why choose AITEX for your Challenge Testing?

ACCREDITED TESTING AND TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
AITEX holds ENAC accreditation for preservative efficacy testing (Challenge Test), guaranteeing technical competence, traceability of procedures and reliable results. This accreditation underpins compliance with the highest quality standards in the microbiological assessment of cosmetic products. We also have extensive experience in the microbiological characterisation of formulations and the validation of preservative systems for different product categories, providing safety and confidence throughout development and marketing.
TESTING TAILORED TO EACH PRODUCT
Every cosmetic product has specific characteristics that can influence its microbiological behaviour. We therefore design tailored testing strategies that take into account factors such as the formulation, the target market, the type of packaging, the target audience and the foreseeable conditions of use. We also develop studies adapted to particular needs, incorporating specific requirements when the risk analysis or project objectives call for them, offering a more precise assessment aligned with each manufacturer’s actual needs.

EXTENDED ASSESSMENT WITH SPECIFIC MICROORGANISMS
In addition to the microorganisms covered by standard protocols, AITEX offers the option of extending studies to include microorganisms of specific interest when the nature of the product or its application makes this advisable. These include microorganisms such as Burkholderia, Klebsiella, Pluralibacter and other relevant pathogens not usually included in the standard panel. This capability enables a more comprehensive microbiological assessment, particularly for formulations with particular requirements or intended for use in environments with more demanding safety requirements.
CHALLENGE TEST FAQS
What is a Challenge Test?
It is a test that assesses the ability of a cosmetic product’s preservative system to control microbial growth throughout its shelf life.
Which standard is used to carry out the test?
The most widely used reference is ISO 11930 for the evaluation of the antimicrobial protection of cosmetic products.
Is a Challenge Test mandatory?
Whether this test is required depends on the type of product and the safety assessment strategy, although it is one of the most widely used tools for validating preservative efficacy.
What is the difference between a Challenge Test and a microbiological analysis?
A microbiological analysis determines the presence of microorganisms at a specific point in time, whereas the Challenge Test assesses the product’s ability to withstand microbiological contamination over time.
Can microorganisms other than those covered by ISO 11930 be studied?
Yes. At AITEX, the study can be tailored by including additional microorganisms depending on the risks associated with the product or the target market.
What are the advantages of an ENAC-accredited test?
Accreditation guarantees that the test is carried out using validated procedures and within a recognised system of technical competence.
Which types of product particularly require this test?
Products with a high water content, natural cosmetics, formulations with a low preservative load and products intended for specific uses tend to benefit particularly from this type of assessment.
