DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE PROCESSES FOR THE CHEMICAL RECYCLING OF TEXTILE WASTE

CHEMUP 2026

Motivation

The continuous increase in global textile production, together with consumption models based on fast fashion, has led to a significant rise in post-consumer waste. This scenario highlights the urgent need to move away from the linear “produce–use–discard” model and transition towards a circular system capable of valorizing complex materials such as polyamides, polyester, cotton, and their blends. The shift towards a more sustainable textile sector requires robust, efficient chemical recycling technologies that are compatible with heterogeneous materials derived from real textile waste.
AITEX has a solid track record in this field, particularly through previous CHEMUP projects, which have established technical and scientific foundations in the depolymerization of polyamides and polyesters, the dissolution and regeneration of cellulose using ionic liquids, and thermochemical processes applied to composites. The CHEMUP 2026 project is driven by the need to make a qualitative leap towards greener technologies by incorporating sustainable catalysts and bio-based solvents, advancing toward scalable processes with a lower environmental impact.

Objectives

The objective of the project is to develop and optimize advanced chemical recycling processes applied to textile waste from polyamide, polyester, cotton, and polyester–cotton blends, using sustainable catalysts and solvents to improve the efficiency, selectivity, and industrial feasibility of the developed routes, and validating the resulting products in new polymeric and textile applications.

Expected results

  • Development of optimized depolymerization protocols for textile PA6, PA66, and PET, achieving higher efficiency and selectivity through the use of sustainable catalysts and solvents.
  • Production of high-purity monomers and oligomers (including BHET) suitable for reuse in new polymer formulations.
  • Development of an integrated valorization methodology for polycotton blends, based on the efficient separation of fractions and their subsequent chemical processing.
  • Production of regenerated cellulose from cotton using alternatives to ionic liquid systems, together with its evaluation in spinning processes or in the formation of new materials.
