Motivation


The use of recycled carbon and glass fibers is a key strategy for promoting the circular economy within the composites sector. Their combination with thermoplastic fibers enables progress toward new hybrid rovings and yarns; however, challenges remain, such as low adhesion between materials and the fragility of recycled fibers during spinning processes.
The project addresses these limitations by studying the properties of recycled fibers and optimizing spinning parameters to improve their compatibility with thermoplastics. Its objective is to facilitate the integration of recycled carbon fiber (rCF) and recycled glass fiber (rGF), which exhibit shorter lengths and greater fragility than virgin fibers, into textile processes intended for structural applications

Objectives


The objective of the project is to develop new compatibilization strategies and optimize textile processing techniques to obtain hybrid rovings and thermoplastic tapes with mechanical properties suitable for applications in the transport, sports, and energy sectors.

Expected results


  • Production of rovings and tapes containing at least 50% recycled fiber.
  • Quantification of the mechanical properties of intermediate products (tensile strength according to ISO 3341 and linear density according to ISO 1889) as a function of the proportion and characteristics of recycled fibers, such as length, tenacity, fineness, and cleanliness.
  • Adaptation of recycled‑fiber rovings and tapes to the requirements of automated lamination processes, mainly pultrusion and filament winding, ensuring sufficient tensile strength to withstand continuous processing.
  • Ensuring good impregnability and compatibilization of intermediate products with polymer matrices.
