STUDY AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW CEMENTITIOUS MATERIALS REINFORCED WITH HIGH‑EFFICIENCY TEXTILE MATERIALS AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR HEAVY LOADS

Motivation

The construction sector relies heavily on metallic reinforcements, such as welded wire meshes and steel structures, which act as the structural skeleton in beams, floors, walls, and other structural elements. These materials provide good mechanical strength; however, their use entails significant limitations, including high weight, which increases transportation, handling, and lifting costs on construction sites, especially on upper floors. In addition, these materials require specific machinery for installation, and their rigidity conditions formwork and assembly processes.
In this context, there is a clear need to explore lighter and more versatile alternatives that maintain or enhance the structural performance of cementitious matrices. As a result, the development of cement‑textile composite materials emerges as a promising alternative to improve structural performance through technically more efficient reinforcement solutions.

Objectives

The main objective of this project is to develop new cementitious solutions reinforced with advanced textile materials, capable of partially or fully replacing traditional metallic elements.

Expected results

  • Development of new textile‑reinforced cement solutions with structural performance equal to or higher than that of conventional steel.
  • Production of lighter and more manageable materials, enabling faster and more efficient installation.
  • Reduction of logistical and construction costs through deployable textile reinforcements and decreased need for formwork and lifting equipment.
  • Manufacturing of medium‑scale specimens for comprehensive composite characterization.
  • Performance of mechanical, chemical, and microstructural tests to assess compatibility, durability, and overall performance.
  • Establishment of correlations between textile architecture, cementitious formulation, and mechanical behavior, fostering a new generation of optimized cementitious materials.
