R&D TO OPTIMISE MELT FUSION SPINNING OF SUSTAINABLE THERMOPLASTIC POLYMERS

ECOMELT 2025

Motivation

The requirements demanded by companies from yarns with sustainable characteristics are becoming more and more stringent and the melt spinning processes will be optimized to improve the physical-mechanical properties of recycled, bio-based and biodegradable/compostable polymers. The aim is to broaden the range of competitive sustainable products with high added value, offering companies in the Valencia Region different real alternatives to adapt their processes/products to the new environmental requirements.

With all this, the aim is to broaden the range of competitive, high value-added sustainable products, offering companies in the Valencian Community various real alternatives to adapt their processes/products to the new environmental requirements, such as the new EU Directive 2018/851, which has established new regulations under which member states will be required to implement separate collection of textile waste by January 1, 2025.

Objectives

Improve the mechanical properties of yarns from recycled, bio-based, compostable and/or biodegradable polymers by optimizing spinning processes in order to minimize the environmental impact of the TEXTILE sector.

Value and competitive advantage

  • Increases competitiveness through sustainable yarns with performance equivalent to conventional materials.
  • Expands the range of advanced yarns made from recycled, bio‑based, and biodegradable polymers.
  • Reduces environmental impact by optimizing melt‑spinning processes.

Obtained results

  • Improvement of mechanical properties of threads made from recycled, bio-based, and biodegradable polymers.
  • Optimization of melt spinning processes to obtain sustainable yarns with competitive technical performance.
  • Development of monofilament and multifilament threads from recycled polymers using continuous and stable processes.
  • Obtaining high-tenacity sustainable threads for technical applications in the textile industry.
  • Development of biobased and biodegradable threads with mechanical properties suitable for industrial processing.
  • Applying texturizing technologies to improve the volume, strength, and feel of sustainable yarns.
  • Manufacturing of demonstrator fabrics to validate the behavior of threads developed in industrial processes.
  • Technical-economic validation of sustainable fibers through semi-industrial tests in collaboration with textile companies.
