THE DEVELOPMENT OF POROUS MATERIALS FOR VARIOUS SECTORS

MATPOROUS

Motivation

Monitoring air quality and energy resources in industry is of vital importance to ensure sustainable and energy-efficient development, promoting pollutant-free, low-emission and energy-sustainable environments. There is now a clear need to develop innovative and efficient technologies to capture and store gases and eliminate harmful agents and the use of porous materials with pores in their internal structure, can be of great use in addressing these challenges through sustainable and high-performance solutions.

In summary, the MATPOROUS project offers an effective and versatile solution for the capture and elimination of polluting gases, as well as the storage of compounds for the production of clean energy and advanced energy technologies with the aim of providing real and scalable solutions to industry.

Objectives

The main objective of the project is the development of porous materials with industrial applications in various sectors in the Valencia Region, such as textiles, construction and chemicals.

Specific objectives include:

– Development of active carbons that incorporate certain catalysts to achieve a high degradation of pollutants and harmful gases.

– Development of aerogels with good mechanical properties and high porosity,.

– Development of MOFs with the aim of using them as pollutant degraders and the synthesis of MOFs that offer optimal gas capture and storage properties for sustainable energy production.

Value and competitive advantage

  • Superior efficiency and lower cost.
  • Multifunctionality and sustainability.
  • Strategic advances in energy and defense.
  • High specialization and technological applicability.

Obtained results

Activated Carbons
  • Activated carbons were improved to capture water from the environment and were successfully used in the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), outperforming MOFs in both efficiency and cost.
  • Additionally, carbon-based carbocatalysts were developed for the degradation of water pollutants.
MOFs
  • MOFs with high porosity and selectivity were developed for the efficient adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • The synthesized MOFs showed promising results compared to commercial ones for hydrogen adsorption and storage as an energy carrier.
Aerogels
  • Aerogels with polymeric and ceramic matrices were synthesized for electromagnetic shielding applications, demonstrating effectiveness in microwave absorption.
  • Aerogels were also developed to mitigate the effects of blast waves, showing great potential in defense-related applications.
