New high-performance funtionalised materials
OPTIMISING AND UPSCALING MANUFACTURING PROCESSES FOR HONEYTEX SYSTEMS
HONEYTEX 2024
Motivation
High-performance honeycomb structures are expensive, while cheaper alternatives do not possess the mechanical performance often required of them. Added to this, most honeycombs available today are difficult to recycle. One of the main motivations for the project is to address this issue by researching and developing a new generation of fully recyclable honeycombs with a more competitive price to performance ratio.

Objectives
- Design and manufacture of a module to automate the assembly process.
- Optimisation of the honeycomb formation process for automation to improve reproducibility
- Optimisation of the properties of honeycombs, with a greater focus on recycled polyester fibres.
- Technical and economic validation of the production process being optimised and of the prototypes developed during the year.
- Achieve the complete optimisation of the honeycomb formation process in the semi-industrial scale continuous demonstrator equipment for the new generation of honeycombs.

Value and competitive advantage

-
Development of a new generation of honeycombs and sandwich panels.
-
Competitive quality/price ratio.
-
Use of recycled fibers from leftover rags from industrial processes.
Obtained results

Development of honeycombs made from carded-punched nonwovens using rPET fibers.
- Development of several honeycomb prototypes and their corresponding processing tests.
- Manufacturing of sandwich panels from nonwovens with recycled polyester and viscose percentages.
Conducting forming tests of sandwich panels.
- Design of the honeycomb assembly demonstrator equipment.
- Verification of the automated assembly process.
