High value-added solutions for strategic markets
STRUCTURING POROUS MATERIALS INTO MACROSCOPIC FORMATS FOR MULTISECTORAL APPLICATIONS
STRUMAT
Motivation
The development of advanced textile recycling processes, such as chemical and thermochemical recycling, is opening new possibilities for obtaining porous materials in powder form with functional properties of interest. However, their physical form presents significant challenges for integration into industrial production processes, especially in the Valencian Community. This difficulty limits their use in technical applications despite their great potential.
Among the most promising porous materials are aerogels, activated carbons, and Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), recognized for their exceptional adsorption properties, thermal and acoustic insulation, lightness, and high specific surface area. Nevertheless, handling them in powder form poses obstacles in terms of safety, efficiency, storage, and industrial application.

Objectives
To structure advanced porous materials (aerogels, activated carbons, and MOFs) obtained from textile waste to make them industrially applicable, selecting and adapting the material characteristics to the requirements of the selected applications. These include environmental decontamination, insulation, and electromagnetic protection.

Expected results

-
Production of high-value porous materials from post-consumer and post-industrial textile waste, promoting a circular economy.
-
Effective structuring of powdered porous materials into macroscopic supports without loss of functionality, improving handling and industrial integration.
-
Development of six functional prototypes integrating porous materials (aerogels, activated carbons, and MOFs) on textile and metallic substrates, adapted to different industrial applications.
-
Functional validation of the prototypes under real-use conditions in applications such as thermal and acoustic insulation, protection against electromagnetic radiation, and environmental decontamination.
