Motivation


The motivations of the project are based on the need to develop protection solutions capable of addressing an increasingly demanding operational environment, where ballistic, impact, and multispectral detection threats are rapidly evolving. Current systems present clear limitations in terms of weight, ergonomics, energy absorption, and camouflage capability, which directly affect soldier mobility, fatigue, and survivability, as well as reducing the effectiveness of military platforms.
Research into new materials, advanced architectures, such as auxetic structures, and manufacturing processes like thermocompression offers the opportunity to overcome these limitations, enabling the development of lighter, more efficient configurations better adapted to the real needs of the end user

Objectives


The main objective of this project is to develop and optimize advanced ballistic and multispectral protection solutions for soldiers and military platforms through research into new materials, structural architectures, and manufacturing processes that improve ballistic performance, impact absorption, ergonomics, weight, and camouflage capability.

Expected results


  • Development of functional prototypes of personal protection systems manufactured by thermocompression, with optimized processing parameters and preliminary mechanical characterization.
  • Validation of auxetic composite configurations with demonstrated trauma reduction capability in controlled tests, along with the selection and comparative evaluation of different ballistic fabrics to define optimal configurations for military vests.
  • Development of initial helmet spacer structures with improved mechanical and comfort properties, as well as preliminary results from recyclability studies, including the identification of viable routes for reincorporating recovered ballistic materials into defence sector production processes.
  • Initial advancements in the evaluation of materials and processes applicable to military platforms and vehicles.
