High value-added solutions for strategic markets
RESEARCH INTO PROCESSES TO CREATE AND VALIDATE NATURAL ACTIVES IN THE COSMETICS SECTOR
BIOACTIVE 2024
Motivation
In the cosmetics sector, consumers are increasingly demanding eco-friendly, sustainable products that reduce waste throughout the value chain and these are an excellent way to attract new consumers.
Upcycling is a trend in the cosmetics market which aims to give waste a second life and take advantage of the benefits it brings by increasing the efficacy of products with natural and non-synthetic ingredients. The use of recycled ingredients from the food industry opens up a wide range of possibilities that are being extended to cosmetic products.
The recovery and use of by-products has three clear objectives: to develop innovative natural products, increase profits and make a direct and positive environmental impact.

Objectives
The general objective of the project is to optimize the extraction of natural active ingredients from organic or agri-food waste, their purification, stabilisation and incorporation into cosmetic matrices for hair and scalp care, and carry out customised efficacy studies to verify claims of beneficial properties.

Value and competitive advantage

-
Highlighting the potential of plant extracts as cosmetic ingredients.
-
Key knowledge on the optimization of extraction processes in the development of natural ingredients for cosmetics.
-
Highly rigorous and specialized evaluations of the efficacy of cosmetic products, both in hair care and dermal applications.
Obtained results

-
Extraction of mango, carrot, and apple peels using hydroalcoholic maceration, enzymatic extraction, and NADES, achieving three times higher concentrations of polyphenols and saponins.
-
Development of in vivo and ex vivo protocols to study hair care products.
-
Research on the internal structure of hair and the scalp.
-
Design of protocols to evaluate the efficacy of cosmetics with the AEVA-HE system, which creates a 3D map of skin topography.
-
Study of an anti-aging eye contour product, showing a 19% reduction in bag volume, 13% reduction in skin roughness and wrinkle volume, and 9% reduction in wrinkle depth.
