RESEARCH INTO SYNERGIES BETWEEN SURFACTANTS FOR SKIN‑FRIENDLY AND ECOLOGICAL FORMULATIONS

Motivation

There is growing interest in detergent products that are not only more sustainable but also gentler on the skin. Due to their high surfactant content, these products inherently present a risk of skin irritation. However, it is widely documented that surfactant mixtures can generate synergistic effects that mitigate this impact by forming larger and more stable micelles. Relevant synergies are also observed when these mixtures include polymers or other additives capable of modifying key parameters such as protein denaturation, effects on the skin barrier, or cellular cytotoxicity.
At the same time, these interactions may enhance formulation efficacy in aspects such as soil removal, foam generation, and active ingredient deposition. In parallel, within the Home Care sector, consumers are increasingly sensitive to the use of products that are more respectful of both the environment and skin health. This trend has driven many companies to reformulate their product lines and to promote claims such as “eco‑friendly,” “sustainable,” or “made with natural ingredients”.

Objectives

The main objective of project is to develop new detergent formulations that are more sustainable, safer, and more effective by optimizing complex surfactant and polymer formulations, with the aim of significantly reducing irritation potential and enhancing functional properties. In parallel, within the Home Care line, the project seeks to explore and evaluate innovative ecological ingredients that enable formulations with a high percentage of natural origin, lower environmental impact, and performance equal to or superior to conventional alternatives.

Expected results

HOME CARE LINE
  • Development of at least one detergent formulation and one phytochemical formulation without biocides, preserved using hurdle technology or natural preservatives.
  • In‑depth investigation of the mechanism of action and performance of probiotics in laundry applications.
  • Development of new formulations in ultra‑concentrated and solid formats, enabling significant reduction of water content and improved product efficiency in terms of cleaning performance and sustainability.
SURFACTANT LINE
  • Evaluation of synergies between surfactants in complex detergent mixtures to optimize key formulation parameters.
  • Assessment of the effect of these synergies on performance parameters such as foam generation/stability and soil removal.
  • Determination of dynamic surface tension of surfactants and their mixtures, including adsorption rate at the interface and wetting capacity.
