COLDMADE

Motivation


The COLDMADE project is framed within the context of the growing demand for sustainability and innovation in the cosmetics and detergents industries, which are seeking more effective and environmentally friendly solutions. Both industries, as part of the global manufacturing sector, have a significant environmental impact. Specifically, the cosmetics industry generates more than 120 tons of CO2 annually and a total water footprint of around 90 million cubic meters per year. This impact mainly comes from emissions during production, transportation, and packaging of products, which has driven companies to adopt practices and technologies to reduce direct and indirect CO2 emissions throughout the value chain, from formulation to the final product. Solutions being explored include the use of renewable energy, optimization of the product life cycle, and sustainable packaging, aligning with international sustainability commitments.

Objectives


The main objective of this project is to research and develop new cosmetic and detergent solutions through cold manufacturing processes in order to maximize energy and operational efficiency, as well as to overcome the challenges that arise when transferring laboratory specifications to industrial-scale production. The project aims to ensure the stability, efficacy, and quality of products while maintaining a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach.

Obtained results


  • Industrial development and validation of a cold‑process hair conditioner incorporating rice ash.
  • Valorization of rice ash as an upcycled cosmetic ingredient through ex vivo efficacy studies.
  • Development and validation of a cold‑process body serum containing a biotechnological active ingredient.
  • Improvement of skin hydration in a cold‑process facial cream compared to a traditional hot‑process facial cream.
  • Development and validation of a cold‑process fabric softener.
  • Reduction of environmental impact through cold manufacturing processes.
