High value-added solutions for strategic markets
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF KNITTED TEXTILE STRUCTURES WITH TECHNICAL DEFENCE AND SAFETY APPLICATIONS
3D-SHIELD
Motivation
Within the field of technical textiles, the development of protective textiles offers many exciting possibilities. From the use of high-performance technical fibres to the development of new single and multi-layer textile structures, options are now available which are of great interest to the defence, personal protection and workwear sectors.
This project aims to take advantage of the versatility of AITEX’s rectilinear weft knitting plant to process materials and develop technical fabrics that meet the extreme requirements demanded by these sectors.
Once the benefits that the technology can offer the sector have been analysed, the project proposes to add value to knitted textiles by developing technical and safety textiles, to promote the technology in the industry.

Objectives
The main objective of 3D-SHIELD focuses on the research and development of new high-performance technical textile structures for the defence, protection and workwear sectors using 3D-knitting technology.
En este sentido, el objetivo principal del proyecto es investigar y desarrollar prendas textiles de punto para la integración de sensores y wearables que mejoren el rendimiento y rehabilitación en deportistas mediante la gamificación.

Value and competitive advantage

-
Development of technical fabrics with excellent burst resistance.
-
Innovation in high-strength textile covers.
-
Improvement of fabric resistance, durability, and lightness.
Obtained results

-
Development of weft-knitted fabrics using high-performance fibers such as aramids, HT PES, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), polyether ether ketone (PEEK), and liquid crystal polymer (LCP).
-
Development of technical weft-knitted textiles produced on a flatbed knitting machine with very high burst resistance.
-
Development of a high-strength textile cover concept applicable to tires for user protection against potential blowouts.
