SUSTAINABLE, BIO-BASED, AND BIOINSPIRED MATERIALS FOR SMART TECHNICAL TEXTILES
SUBBIMATT
Motivation
By developing a new generation of smart, sustainable, bio-based, and bioinspired technical textile materials, and demonstrating their benefits for energy management linked to everyday products, we will create positive momentum for their application in a wide range of final technical uses. By combining this with widespread awareness (across sectors and the general public), we aim to help the EU industry remain competitive and become more resilient while transitioning to a circular and climate-neutral economy.

Objectives
The main objective of SUBBIMATT is to develop a new generation of sustainable, bio-based, and bioinspired smart technical textile materials. To achieve this, we will develop peelable adhesives, bio-based polyurethanes (bio-PU), and thermosensitive polymers (NTR). These technologies will be complemented by (pre)commercial bio-based materials that will enable a range of circular intermediate textile products: high-end coated fabrics, nanomembranes, and functionalized filaments (with shape memory).
These will form the foundation for bioinspired smart textile materials (STM) that enable mechanical movement, energy harvesting (based on the “piezo and tribo-electric” effect), and adjustable fabric opening.
Expected results

Development of a “Safe and Sustainable by Design” (SSbD) model for technical textiles, covering the entire life cycle, applied to the SUBBIMATT developments.

Pilot production of bio-based adhesives and innovative materials (bio-PA, shape-memory bio-PU, self-healing bio-PU, and bio-NTR hydrogels) with complete characterization and scaling guidelines.

Creation at the pilot scale of advanced textiles: coated fabrics, functionalized nanomembranes, and specialized filaments for energy and shape memory; functional and circularity testing with conventional textile equipment.

Functional prototypes: inflatable actuators, piezoelectric and triboelectric energy harvesters, and adjustable opening fabrics with durability and scaling tests.

Three industrial demonstrators with energy harvesting: a pneumatic building envelope, a car interior, and a garment with adaptive breathability, along with functionality and circularity evaluations.

Experimental protocols and mathematical/numerical models for STM optimization and design, as well as guidelines for their use in demonstrators.

Exploitation strategies for 10 key results, business models for demonstrators, integration of external developments, cross-sector events, and training activities in key sectors.
