R&D TO OPTIMISE MELT FUSION SPINNING OF SUSTAINABLE THERMOPLASTIC POLYMERS
ECOMELT 2025
Motivation
The requirements demanded by companies from yarns with sustainable characteristics are becoming more and more stringent and the melt spinning processes will be optimized to improve the physical-mechanical properties of recycled, bio-based and biodegradable/compostable polymers. The aim is to broaden the range of competitive sustainable products with high added value, offering companies in the Valencia Region different real alternatives to adapt their processes/products to the new environmental requirements.
With all this, the aim is to broaden the range of competitive, high value-added sustainable products, offering companies in the Valencian Community various real alternatives to adapt their processes/products to the new environmental requirements, such as the new EU Directive 2018/851, which has established new regulations under which member states will be required to implement separate collection of textile waste by January 1, 2025.

Objectives
Improve the mechanical properties of yarns from recycled, bio-based, compostable and/or biodegradable polymers by optimizing spinning processes in order to minimize the environmental impact of the TEXTILE sector.
Expected results

-
Study the different recycled, bio-based, biodegradable and compostable polymers on the market and evaluate their potential for improvement (depending on their characteristics) in melt spinning production processes.
-
Improve and adapt melt spinning plants for the spinning of sustainable polymers (modification of thermocouples to adapt the extrusion temperature range, modification of the capacity of extrusion pumps).
-
Improve the mechanical properties of yarns from recycled polymers (textile rPET, chemical rPET, rPA…) through the optimization of “Spunmelt” spinning processes, to obtain high tenacity yarns with values higher than 5 grams/denier for technical applications.
-
To improve the mechanical properties of yarns obtained from bio-based, compostable and/or biodegradable polymers (PHA’s, BioPA, BioPBS, protein derivatives), through the optimization of “Spunmelt” spinning processes, with target tenacity values higher than 2.5 grams/denier.
-
Develop demonstrator fabrics from the sustainable yarns developed and validate the results.
