Motivation
The composite materials typically used in construction and general composites sectors have many characteristics that make them truly interesting as a complement to other conventional materials, such as their low weight, excellent rigidity and strength and the energy savings they provide in sectors such as transport and aviation. However, these materials also have a number of trade-offs, as many lack other properties such as resistance to fire, weathering and UV radiation, or are not sustainable. Most of them also pose a real problem when it comes to dealing with the end of their useful life, as they are not easily recyclable.
Objectives
- To complete a comprehensive state-of-the-art study on resin functionalisation, resins with reversible chemistry, such as functional and recyclable vitrimers and composites, as well as sustainable and bio-based resins and composites.
- To achieve optimum additivation of target thermosetting resins to successfully develop functionalised composite materials with fire-resistant properties and others identified as necessary by companies in the Valencian Community.
- To develop recyclable composite materials on a laboratory scale, and to empirically test their repair and recycling capabilities, as well as making a true assessment of their reusability.
