R&D IN THE USE OF NATURAL MATERIALS AND WASTES IN TEXTILE FINISHING
APRONATEX
Motivations
The generation of by-products or waste in the different stages of production processes is currently a problem worldwide, due to the fact that in most cases they are not processed or disposed of properly, a situation that contributes to the process of environmental pollution. These wastes have a high potential to be used in different processes that include the elaboration of new products, adding value to the original products and recovering altered environmental conditions.
Within Aitex there is a high awareness of the need to reach an improvement in sustainability within the textile industry by reusing and making the most of the industrial waste generated in the production processes.

Objectives
The two main objectives of this project will be:
- To investigate the application of new materials of vegetable and mineral origin, as well as the use of both agricultural and industrial waste to be used in textile ennoblement (dyes and functional finishes).
- Research and optimisation of the growth of microorganisms capable of generating different colours to be used as textile dyes, as well as the research and study of new techniques for the extraction of natural pigments.
Value and competitive advantage

-
Improvement in color performance and aging fastness with respect to light.
-
Utilization of agro-industrial waste for textile finishing, achieving enhancements such as PFC hydrophobicity and colors that are difficult to obtain with natural extracts.
-
A natural, inexhaustible, and safe source of pigments.
Results obtained

-
Improvement in dyeing with natural and mineral extracts, enhancing color performance and light aging fastness.
-
Implementation of finishes and dyes that enhance special fabric properties, such as PFC-free hydrophobicity, using entirely natural processes.
-
Development of different cultivation mediums where pigments produce varying colors, allowing for two distinct colors from the same pigment.
-
Production of a pigment derived from bacteria bioproduced using industrial waste.
