TAILORED OMICS INGREDIENTS FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF MICROBIOME, HEALTH AND FOOD QUALITY FROM A MULTI‑SECTORAL PERSPECTIVE

Motivation
The Spanish Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation, together with the priorities established within the framework of the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation, identifies a Safe and Healthy Food Chain as a priority area of action. This area is considered a key driver for the transition towards a more sustainable, competitive agri‑food system aligned with societal demands for health and well‑being.
Likewise, current European and national policy priorities, ranging from the Farm to Fork Strategy to the National Strategy for Food, Nutrition and Health, place the need to offer citizens safer, healthier and more sustainable foods at the centre of the debate, while promoting a shift towards resource‑efficient and environmentally respectful production models. In this context, the integration of omics technologies emerges as a transformative tool to enhance scientific and technical knowledge related to food, its impact on human and animal health, and the potential for nutritional and functional personalisation.
Objectives
The main objective of the project is to establish a strategic cooperation network among six Spanish technology centres specialised in complementary fields, with the aim of increasing their scientific and technical excellence in the application of omics technologies to the development of new ingredients and functional foods produced through innovative processes. These developments are intended to positively modulate different microbiomes, including the human gut microbiome, the human skin microbiome and the animal rumen microbiome, while improving food quality and human and animal health from a multisectoral and sustainable perspective.
The ultimate goal is to position the consortium as a national and international reference in applied research within the safe and healthy food chain, generating tangible impact in terms of new R&D developments, technology transfer and support for the agri‑food, cosmetic and livestock business sectors.
Expected results

Consolidation of R&D synergies through the maximisation of knowledge and access to diverse technologies, as well as the establishment of complementarities among the technical capabilities of each centre by integrating multidisciplinary teams.

Attraction of talent and expansion of the OMIPERBIO network through international contacts and participation in open events.

Valorisation of innovative food and health‑related technologies, from both industrial and gastronomic perspectives, targeting different population groups.

Development of new business models based on the robustness of scientific and technical results and the demonstration of their industrial and economic feasibility.

Generation and transfer of new knowledge and technologies to companies, driven by the growth of the network’s centres and reflected in patents, the creation of spin‑offs, R&D contracts and the sustained expansion of research teams.
