RESEARCH INTO THE SYNERGIES BETWEEN TENSIOACTIVE ASSETS IN DETERGENTS

CLEAN2GREEN 2025

Motivation

Fabric care products, such as softeners and fabric fresheners, often have a high ecological footprint due to ingredients that are poorly biodegradable, ecotoxic, and potentially harmful to health, such as synthetic surfactants, microplastics in encapsulated fragrances, and biocidal preservatives. In response to this issue, the consumption of eco-friendly products, particularly in the home care sector, is increasing, driven by a more environmentally conscious society and a growing demand for sustainability. As a result, many brands are reformulating their products and using terms like “sustainable,” “eco-friendly,” or “with natural ingredients.”

At the same time, there is a rising interest in products that are more sustainable and skin-friendly, which do not alter the skin’s pH or protective barrier or cause irritation. Detergent products contain many surfactants, which can be irritating, but it is known that combining different surfactant families can improve their properties and reduce their irritation potential. This is because they form larger, more stable micelles, thereby lowering their dermal impact.

Objectives

The main objective of Clean2Green2025 is the development of sustainable and effective fabric softener/perfume formulations based on natural ingredients and/or additives to reduce the use of surfactants, synthetic polymers or other ingredients of low biodegradability that have a high environmental impact. The synergies and interactions between surfactants and surfactant-polymer mixtures will also be investigated and the effect of these synergies on parameters such as irritant potential or on efficacy parameters such as foam generation or cleansing will be evaluated.

Expected results

HOME CARE LINE
  • Development of at least 2 fabric softener formulations with >90% natural-origin ingredients (softness boosters, rheology modifiers, etc.) that match or exceed the performance of conventional products.
  • Development of at least 1 water-less fabric softener formula.
  • Development of at least 1 fabric freshener with >90% natural-origin ingredients.
  • Creation of at least 1 softener and 1 fabric freshener without biocides, preserved through barrier technology.
SURFACTANT LINE
  • Study and validation of synergies between anionic + non-ionic surfactants through zein and CMC tests at different concentrations.
  • Evaluation of the effect of these synergies on performance: foam generation/stability (HDW) and dirt removal (laundry detergent).
  • Comparison of the irritation potential in surfactant mixtures using techniques such as zein test, TEWL, patch test, or open test.
  • Use of mathematical models to correlate irritation potential (zein, 3D models) with physicochemical properties (HLB, chain length, number of ethoxylations, etc.).
