RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF KNITTED STRUCTURES WITH TECHNICAL APPLICATIONS IN DEFENCE AND SECURITY
3D-SHIELD 2025
Motivation
The development of protective textiles offers numerous opportunities in sectors such as defense and workwear. The 3D-SHIELD project aims to leverage AITEX’s weft knitting technology to process high-performance fibers (such as aramids or high-modulus polyethylene) and develop advanced technical fabrics.
The project will focus on the precise processing of strong and abrasive fibers, as well as the design of technical knit structures that provide high mechanical strength and controlled elasticity through reinforcements and fillers.
The goal is to enhance the performance of knitted fabrics in protective applications, thereby promoting their use in the technical and safety textile industry.

Objectives
The main objective of the project is the research and development of new high-performance textile structures for the defence, protection and workwear sectors based on the implementation of 3D-knitting technology (knitted fabric in a rectilinear type system).
Expected results

-
High-resistance textile structures optimized for use in the manufacturing of industrial protective panels or covers, as well as tire covers for heavy-duty machinery commonly used in the construction, maritime, or mining sectors.
-
Improvement of the blast resistance performance of the textile protective cover concept developed during the first year of the project.
-
High cut-resistant textile structures designed to protect against sharp objects, intended for use in safety items such as helmets, gloves, or garments.
-
Weft-knitted textile structures with functional properties: fabrics with integrated sensors directly in the knitting process, and fabrics with heating or light-emitting capabilities.
