PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE HABITAT AND CONSTRUCTION 4.0

ECOHABITAT 2024

Motivation

The collaboration between the Directorate General for Housing, formerly the Directorate General for Ecological Innovation in Construction (DGIEC), and the REDIT Technology Institutes (IITT) primarily aims to enhance the competitiveness of companies in the habitat and construction sectors by incorporating key R&D&I lines developed by the institute network.

This collaboration began in 2022 with a preliminary analysis of the network’s current capabilities and sectoral priorities, continuing through 2023 and 2024.

In 2024, ten technology institutes will carry out an activity plan aimed at bringing the sector closer to new technological innovation lines from a holistic perspective. These institutes include AIDIMME (Wood and Metal), AIJU (Child Spaces and Leisure), AIMPLAS (Plastics), AINIA (Agri-food), AITEX (Textiles), IBV (Biomechanics), INESCOP (Footwear), ITC (Ceramics), ITE (Energy), and ITI (ICT). Their efforts will focus on architecture and construction to achieve a sustainable habitat, supporting the ecological transition in architecture.

Objectives

The goal of this project is to leverage the full potential of REDIT, Spain’s leading network for SME innovation support, to benefit one of the Valencian Community’s strategic sectors: sustainable habitat and construction. This initiative aims to establish the region as a national innovation benchmark.

The lines of work for this year are focused on identifying and introducing the main technological initiatives and capabilities promoted by the IITT to the habitat and construction sectors:

  • Updating the web platform.
  • Disseminating the capabilities developed by the IITT among sector stakeholders (associations, companies, professionals, etc.).
  • Coordinating the participation of the IITT in joint initiatives to boost innovation in the habitat and construction sectors.
  • Developing specific projects within the habitat and construction fields.

Expected results

  • Periodic contribution of AITEX research projects applicable to habitat, architecture, and sustainable construction, adding them to the platform https://redit.habitat-sostenible.es/ developed by REDIT in 2022. Two contributions were made: one in February and the second in June 2024, with the following projects:
    • 1st Contribution: BIO-COSTUM, FINTEX, UP-CIRCULAR, and VEGGIE.
    • 2nd Contribution: FASHION TECH, GREEN-COMP, PROPLANET, TEXPLAST, WOODYTEXT, and VALHABITAT 2024.
  • Participation in dissemination activities with companies and institutes to promote sustainable projects in habitat, construction, and architecture. Collaboration with REDIT in designing a brochure highlighting its capabilities and those of the ITTs involved in the ECOHABITAT 2024 project.
  • Development of composites with sensorized flax fibers, offering an eco-friendly alternative and the possibility of obtaining real-time information on the condition of the building and its structure. Additionally, LED lighting actuators have been added to enhance their utility and efficiency.
