TPTex THERAPEUTIC PREVENTION TEXTILE: R+D OF THE PREVENTION OF PATHOLOGIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE LOWER LIMBS (LIPEDEMA, LINFEDEMA, MUSCLE FATIGUE) USING THERAPEUTIC FABRICS

Year: 2019

MOTIVATION

Health is an important issue for people. Dignified health care must take include both prevention – to avoid diseases – and treatment, for enhanced quality of life.

The TPTex project aims to improve the quality of life in two specific sectors:

– Women who suffer from different pathologies of lymph or fat accumulation in the lower limbs, such as lymphedema and lypedema.

– Athletes who, after long distance races or extreme exercise, require help to recover from extreme muscular and metabolic fatigue this creates.

The project aims to improve the wearer’s health through collaboration between the textile and sports industries.

It is important to highlight that lypedema is a disease that affects between 10 and 16% of people and the World Health Organization (WHO) recognised it as a disease in May 2018.

The development of solutions using structures, materials and properties is considered of special relevance as a recent market study into pathologies found that a customised compression garment may cost around 300 euros, which many people cannot afford because in addition, these articles must be renewed regularly (approximately every 5 months)The project aims to promote collaboration between external services and companies to create compression garments for the prevention and treatment of lymphedema and lipedema. The garments must be appropriate for use during sports and exercise.

Current trends in compression garments for athletes are concerned with recovery after a race, so the project will fabricate a range of prototypes for lower limbs that improve recovery after exercise to be trialled during a long distance race.

EXPECTED RESULTS

  • Create specific compressive textile structures for lower limb pathologies manufactured in Spain (the majority are imported from other European countries, which hinders their rapid use and customisation).
  • Development of compression garments that improve the quality of life of patients suffering from swollen legs.
  • Development of garments to prevent or treat muscle fatigue after intense physical exercise.
  • Field trials in both lines of action to evaluate the garments
  • Knowledge of all the existing regulations controlling field trials and clinical studies for this type of garment.
