MOTIVATION


High performance technical honeycombs are costly, the lower-priced ones fall short in terms of mechanical performance. In addition, most of the honeycombs available today are very difficult to recycle. Improving these limitations of commercial honeycombs is the main motivation for the research and development of a new generation of fully recyclable honeycombs with a more competitive price/performance ratio.

 

OBJECTIVES


The main objective of HONEYTEX 2021 is the design and construction of semi-industrial continuous thermocompression equipment for the development of a new generation of honeycombs, optimise the manufacturing process and improve the mechanical and economic performance of the new cores.

 

EXPECTED RESULTS


Design and manufacture of semi-industrial equipment for the continuous production of the new generation of honeycombs.

  • Increased core strength by optimising core composition.
  • Improved manufacturing processes and construction of new honeycombs to increase mechanical performance.
  • Automation of the manufacturing process for the new generation of honeycombs to reduce overall manufacturing costs.
  • Technical and economic feasibility studies to validate the cores in terms on a semi-industrial scale.

The development of a new generation of honeycombs will be an innovation for any sector where weight reduction is important without compromising performance and enhancing physical attributes, compared to traditional materials commonly used. The new generation of honeycombs will be demonstrably different available competitors’ honeycombs in terms of price reduction and maintenance or improvement of the physical-mechanical performance of comparable cores, expanding the range of applications for these materials with a highly competitive strength to weight ratio.

Many different materials can be used to manufacture the new generation of honeycombs, enabling the development of honeycombs with a variety of mechanical properties at accessible prices. The honeycombs will offer performance to cost ratios that are very close to service requirements, opening up application opportunities where previously there was no possibility due to cost and performance limitations.

This project is funded by the Conselleria d’Economia Sostenible, Sectors Productius, Comerç i Treball de la Generalitat Valenciana, through IVACE.
