STAR -Smart Textile Architecture – Research and development of smart textile structures used in architecture and construction that allow interaction with users to improve their quality of life.

MOTIVATION

The growth in urban centres is increasing yearly and according to a World Bank report, half of the world’s inhabitants, more than 4 billion people, live in urban areas. Several reports say that by 2050, 66% of the world population, about 6 billion people, will live in cities.

In Spain, 80% of the population now resides in cities. Faced with the advantages that cities offer in terms of economic and social growth, cultural progress and innovation, problems arising from increased energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and waste production are on the increase, drastically affecting the sustainability of city centres.

Given this forecast, there is a need to transform our cities into “Smart Cities” that use technology to create more efficient public services and protect the environment, improving the quality of life of their citizens (2015, National Plan for Smart Cities) .

 

OBJECTIVES

  • The objective of the project is the research and development of smart textile structures used in architecture and construction that enable interaction between users and technological, sustainable and creative infrastructures to improve their quality of life.
  • In particular, the following objectives have been established:
  • Development of photovoltaic fabrics that capture solar energy for street lighting. The research will focus on creating flexible photovoltaic cells, integrated into a textile, that can be rolled up and which are resistant to weather.
  • Sensorised textile structures to monitor environmental parameters: temperature, humidity and light.
  • Research into the application of new materials to take advantage of heat (textiles based on solar thermal collectors) or which can change shape according to ambient light (electroactive polymers).
  • Create detatiled knowledge about the textile architecture market.

 

EXPECTED RESULTS

The result of the project will be the development of different stressed textile prototype architectural structures that reduce the energy consumption of smart cities by incorporating:

– Photovoltaic cells capable of powering an LED lighting system.

– Environmental parameter sensors integrated into the structure.

– New materials to take advantage of heat (textiles based on solar thermal collectors) or which can change shape according to ambient light (electroactive polymers).

 

This project is funded by the Conselleria d’Economia Sostenible, Sectors Productius, Comerç i Treball de la Generalitat Valenciana, through IVACE.
