EFITERM  – R&D OF SOLAR PROTECTION DEVICES FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Year: 2020

MOTIVATION

The energy efficiency of buildings is one of the main requirements today in terms of sustainability and new construction, solar protection devices control and optimise the entry of solar radiation, enhancing energy efficiency for heating and cooling, and maximising the use of natural light.

The energy impact of these solar protection devices represents an energy saving of around 40% for heating alone and a reduction of approximately 5˚C in summer because windows are one of the points of the house where the thermal transmittance index is higher.

These devices can provide the following benefits:

  • Energy saving and sustainability. Solar protection devices contribute to cost savings significantly decrease energy consumption and CO2 emissions, increasing sustainability and protecting the environment.
  • Thermal comfort. The regulation of the temperature of a room increases thermal comfort and reduces the use of air conditioning systems.
  • Lighting comfort. Reduces eye strain through the use of natural light and the saves energy.

These devices are regulated by laws determining their characteristics and configuration and whether they are fitted inside or outside. The regulations cover their installation on glazing systems, the transmittance and reflectance measurements to be taken on the device and their classification according to the level of thermal protection and visual comfort they provide.

  • Standard: UNE-EN 410 – Glass for building – Determination of the light and solar characteristics of glazing.

  • Norma: UNE-EN-ISO-52022-1:2017- Energy efficiency of buildings. Thermal, solar and daylight properties of building components and elements. Part 1: Simplified method of calculation of solar and daylighting characteristics of solar protection devices combined with glazing.

  • Norma: UNE-EN 14501 – Blinds and shutters – Thermal and light comfort – Performance evaluation.

OBJECTIVES

  • The main objective of the project is to improve both the thermal and visual properties of textile devices for solar protection, to increase energy efficiency in buildings by studying the variables of fabric structures, weave, materials and finishes that influence them.

The successful outcome of the project will require an in-depth study of the variables that can be modified to increase the properties of the devices. The variables include the materials used, the structures and the type of weave.

The specific objectives of the project are:

  • Research different materials and their behaviour, in different compositions using a blend of raw materials and different types of fibre, as well as an in-depth study of the use of fibres with special additives and the increases gained in their properties compared to conventional fibres
  • Develop textured yarns using different technologies (DTY/ATY/BCF) to create optimised yarns to improve device sturdiness and shielding.
  • Theoretical study and pilot plant for weaving the different materials and the density of fabrics depending on the structure (double, triple fabrics) and the weave type.
  • Research the capabilities of warp knitting, the weave density and protection properties of devices as an alternative to conventional openwork weaving processes.
  • Finishing textile prototypes using mechanical procedures. To reduce the environmental impact of the product during production, use and recycling, chemical treatments will be avoided.
  • Characterising the properties of reflectance and transmittance to measure the level of protection and comfort offered by the device.
  • Manufacturing prototypes on an industrial scale from samples obtained in the laboratory with better results.
  • Disseminate and transfer the results of the project to manufacturers in the sectors involved and to the general public through the proposed dissemination and transfer plans.

EXPECTED RESULTS

Solar protection devices with increased thermal properties and visual shielding capacity are expected to increase energy efficiency and sustainability.

To achieve the objective, all production variables must be monitored to improve the results in terms of thermal and visual performance.
