ELECTRON MICROSCOPE

AITEX offers an electron microscope service that is equipped with a scanning electron microscope. This technique allows great advantages for textile analysis.

Microscopic analysis can be enhanced through computer software to allow the measurement of distances between fibres, which can provide even more information about the sample.

Other uses of this equipment are:

The detection, identification and classification of living organisms (micro organisms, arthropods, protozoa etc) for example it can detect and identify fungus on stains.
The detection, identification and classification of pollen, minerals and seeds for geotextile applications.
To capture images of defects. E.g. microscopic holes, surface damage, contamination etc.
The detection and counting of microcapsules in a textile sample (manual count). A study of the distribution of microcapsules in textiles.
Percentage count of different fibre types within a single sample.
To capture images of the micro-structure of non-wovens and to subsequently enhance the image to detect fibre lengths etc.
Measurement of fibre diameters and length.
To determine the delicacy of nanofibres and microfibers.
  To identify transversal fibre sections.
  The detection of surface details
The observation of the construction of threads and textiles
Detailed visualisation of any surfaces; textiles, plastics, metals etc.
  Classification of coverings and flocks.
To obtain data on the effects of chemical treatments on textiles; for example plasma treatment.
To obtain studies on wear and breakages in textile fibres

Microanalysis via x-ray energy dispersal

In addition to the above functions, the equipment has a system for the microanalysis via x-ray energy dispersal (EDAX) which allows a qualitative and quantitative analysis of elements.

The system obtains a spectrum of the chemical elements which comprise the sample. The system can detect elements with a higher atomic number than boron and the results are displayed as a percentage of atomic weight and elements within the sample.

Another option that EDAX offers is the compilation of composition profiles and element distribution mapping. This option, apart from identifying the elements within a sample, can locate them.

The applications that this equipment provides are the following:

The detection of elements in fibres. For example, the identification of silver with antibacterial purposes.
The identification of the chemical element composition in samples.
The analysis of metallic elements and their composition.
   The analysis of metallic coverings.
   The analysis of metallic fibres.
The detection and identification of stains on a textile caused by metals or their oxides etc.
